Alleyway

Screenshots1 / 2

The title screen displays "ALLEYWAY" in large pixelated white block letters centered on a dark background with a grid pattern. Below the title, text reads "TOP SCORE 0200" followed by "PUSH START KEY" and a copyright notice "©1969 Nintendo" in smaller black text. The overall composition uses a monochrome palette typical of early Game Boy displays, with stark contrast between the white typography and dark background.

Alleyway is a brick-breaker action game developed by Intelligent Systems for the Game Boy in 1989. Players control a paddle at the bottom of the screen to bounce a ball upward, breaking colored brick formations at the top. The objective is to clear all bricks on each stage before the ball falls past the paddle. The game features simple controls using the D-Pad for paddle movement. Ball bounces produce different angles of reflection depending on where the paddle strikes, creating varied trajectories. The game progresses through multiple stages with increasing complexity, featuring new brick patterns and modified ball behavior. As an early Game Boy title, Alleyway demonstrated the console's capability for fast-paced action gameplay on a compact display.
