The King of Fighters 2003 is a 2D arcade fighting game released by SNK Playmore in 2003. Players select a team of three fighters from a large roster of characters drawn from SNK's various franchises and face off against other teams in one-on-one matches. A key new feature is the Tag System, which allows players to switch between team members mid-round rather than waiting until one fighter is knocked out, adding tactical depth to combat. The game uses a six-button layout covering light and heavy punches and kicks, plus rolls and special moves. Players progress through a series of opponent teams before reaching the final boss. The 2003 entry also advances the series' ongoing story arc involving a new antagonist faction.
