War of the Worlds

Screenshots1 / 2

A black screen displays white vector-style graphics centered vertically. At the top, a symmetrical geometric alien spacecraft with angular lines and radiating spikes points downward. Below it, the text "GAME OVER" appears in a blocky, pixelated font. At the bottom, another similar alien craft is shown in a smaller size with crossing lines beneath it. Small square outlines flank the upper edges of the screen. The entire interface uses white lines on a solid black background.

War of the Worlds is a 1981 arcade action game developed by Cinematronics, loosely inspired by H.G. Wells' science fiction novel. The player controls a ground-based cannon and must defend against waves of descending Martian tripod war machines. Using a rotational aiming mechanism, players fire projectiles upward to destroy the alien attackers before they reach the ground. The game uses vector graphics, consistent with Cinematronics' style during that era. Enemy machines increase in speed and aggression as the player progresses through successive attack waves, raising the difficulty steadily. The single-player game ends when the player's defenses are overwhelmed. Scoring is based on the number of enemies destroyed across each wave.
