Rampart
Rampart is an action-strategy hybrid from 1992 that combines tower defense and shooting gameplay. Developed by Atari Games, this DOS port brings the arcade original to personal computers. Players command a castle defense, spending timed phases drawing walls with brick pieces to create fortifications around their castle. Between building phases, players must shoot down waves of approaching enemy ships and projectiles using a cannon. The game features three distinct fortress layouts, and difficulty increases through multiple levels with faster enemy attacks and more complex strategies required. Players have limited time to place walls, adding urgency to defensive planning. Combat requires accuracy and quick reflexes to eliminate threats before they breach the defenses. The cycle repeats across increasingly challenging levels, combining strategic wall placement with arcade-style action shooting.
