Adventure Island

Screenshots1 / 3

A red-haired character stands in the lower-left of a blue brick-tiled level. Two blue demon-faced statues with outstretched arms sit on pedestals in the middle and right areas. The upper portion shows light blue ice or snow tiles arranged in rows, with a white ice sickle sprite visible near the top center. The pixelated 8-bit art style uses a predominantly blue color palette with black outlines on all sprites.

Adventure Island is a platformer developed by Hudson in 1988 for the NES. Players control Master Higgins, a runner who races through tropical levels collecting fruit and power-ups while avoiding enemies and obstacles. The game features a unique continuous-running mechanic where the protagonist automatically moves forward, requiring players to focus on jumping and dodging rather than horizontal movement. Higgins can grab skateboard and hang glider power-ups that temporarily enhance mobility. A descending health bar adds urgency—players must collect fruit regularly or lose health. The game consists of multiple worlds with progressively challenging layouts and enemy placements. With only a jump button and directional input, the control scheme is straightforward. The combination of automatic movement and real-time hazards creates a rhythmic platforming challenge.
